Ladies Merit Cross

Description

This Prussian Cross of Merit for Women in gold is made from gilded silver and enamel. Mounted on a bow for ladies. The Women's Cross of Merit was established on October 22, 1907, by King Wilhelm II in two classes (silver and gold). It replaced the decorative brooches awarded earlier by the Empress and Queen Auguste Viktoria. Those had been awarded in a similar manner but partly with an empress crown while this order decorations was designed using the queens crown. Only women and maidens who had rendered outstanding services in the field of charity, ecclesiastical or social work could be nominated for this award. Prerequisite for the award of the class in gold was the possession of the Merit Cross in silver for at least 10 years. According to Sauerwald (O&E 13th volume, February 2011, page 9 ff.), a few women's merit crosses in gold were made in 750 gold for the empress herself and also for Empress Augusta's daughter and the Grand Duchess of Baden. All other decorations were made from gilded silver. The number of awards is probably less than 30 examples.

Exceedingly rare and hard to obtain.
