A fantastic group of a brave Wurttemberg officer from the Great War consisting of a pin back Prussian Iron Cross 1st Class, 1914, with blackened core and nickel silver frame, a iron based black wound badge as well as a cut out version of the same, a bronze sport badge, type DRA, and victor medal from the 10th sport week of the sport society from Neuss in 1930, a miniature pin featuring the Iron Crosses 1st and 2nd class, Hindenburg Cross, 1934, and black wound badge, a Kyffhäuser Veteran Society membership pin and his medal bar.

The Medal bar consist of the Iron Cross 2nd Class, 1914, with markers mark on the ring, the Wurttemberg Military Merit Order, knight’s cross in real GOLD and enamel, Austria, Military Merit Cross 3rd class with war decoration, maker and silver content markings on the suspension device in silver and enamel and Wurttemberg National Guard, Long Service Medal.

The Wurttemberg Military Merit Order, knight’s cross, was made by Eduard Foehr until 1915 in gold. The Foehr company manufactured only 135 knight’s crosses in real gold and 328 silver gild examples to the orders chancellery. Only 114 knight’s crosses were awarded in 1914 and 363 in the following year, 1915. Only 2187 knight’s crosses were awarded during the Great War in total.

4 knight’s crosses from inventory were adapted to the new style in 1914 by Foehr. They basically removed the crown suspender from the cross and attached a simple eyelet loop like seen here. The eyelet loop is made from red gold while the cross reflects yellow gold. We can not say if this is one of the 4 for certain.

This golden knight’s cross is in mint condition and one of the rarest knight cross variations awarded in WWI.
