Prussia - Iron Cross 2nd Class 1870 to a Jewish soldier


Description

A unique Iron Cross 1870/71 group consisting of a miniature barrette and paybook to a jewish soldier. Fusilier Isidor Simon served in the 8th Pomeranian Infantry Regiment No. 61 and was retired August 1, 1871. His engagements are listed in the book as well as the entry of the Iron Cross and the 1866 commemorative medal for Koeniggraetz.

The barrette includes miniatures of the Iron Cross 1870/71 2nd class and the jubilee oak leaf cluster followed by the 1870/71 commemorative medal for combatants, 1866 commemorative cross for Koeniggraetz and Centennial Medal.

Rare grouping from the Franco Prussian War.

King Frederick William III of Prussia initially created the Iron Cross as a military decoration on March 17, 1813, during the Napoleonic Wars. The Iron Cross was also awarded during the Franco-Prussian War (1870), World War I (1914), and World War II (1939).

The Iron Cross was usually a military decoration only but awarded to civilians for performing military functions in a few instances.
